Children and Teens
A FamilySolutions Treatment Plan

Children who are lovingly nurtured to believe the best in themselves, others, and their world will grow to have a more positive outlook--a necessary ingredient to good mental health. Children who are encouraged to look for solutions, rather than focus on the problem and sink into hopelessness and despair, will learn to set obtainable goals and reach the answers that bring healing and happiness.

With a solution-focused model in parenting and family therapy, you and your children will learn to practice new skills and behaviors that will bring about more peace, more positive attitudes, and much, much more laughter in your home!

Advice to Parents
  • Seek immediate help from a mental health professional using solutions-focused family therapy--call today for an appointment!
  • Seek medical advice if you suspect health problems or symptoms are not explained.
  • Maintain a regular and nutritional diet. Avoid meal skipping. A proper diet is a critical source of energy for the child's ability to cope and recover.
  • Maintain a regular sleep cycle. Avoid sleeping or napping during the day if it is difficult to sleep during regular times. Irregular sleep patterns prolong or worsen symptoms of depression.
  • Stay involved and avoid extended isolation from positive activities and influences.
  • Physical activity can help relieve or manage depression.
  • Spend time with the child, be caring, listen well and be understanding.
  • Take time on a regular basis to help the child enjoy pleasurable activities and recreational interests.
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

ADHD is a common disorder that affects an estimated 8% to 10% of school-age children. Boys are about three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with it, though it's not yet understood why. Children with ADHD act without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing. They may understand what is expected of them but have trouble following through because they can't sit still, pay attention, or attend to details. Their world is very difficult for them to manage at times.

What are the Symptoms of ADHD?

1. An inattentive type, with signs that include:
  • Distractibility
  • Problems with organization
  • Apparent listening problems
  • Difficulty following instructions
  • Forgetfulness in daily activities
  • Difficulty with paying attention to details
  • Careless errors in schoolwork or other activities
  • Avoidance or dislike of tasks that require mental effort
  • Difficulty with sustained attention in tasks or play activities
  • Tendency to lose things like toys, notebooks, or homework
2. A hyperactive-impulsive type, with signs that include:
  • Excessive talking
  • Fidgeting or squirming
  • Difficulty playing quietly
  • Difficulty remaining seated
  • Excessive running or climbing
  • Always seeming to be "on the go"
  • Difficulty waiting for a turn or in line
  • Problems with interrupting or intruding
  • Blurting out answers before hearing the full question
Medication is an important part of treatment; however, most all pediatricians agree that medication alone is not the answer. Proper medication, coupled with a FamilySolutions Treatment Plan, will help parents find the answers they are looking for in order to have a healthier and happier family!
